Texas Targeting Top 2026 Defensive Line Prospect
Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are making a strong push to land James Johnson, the top-rated defensive lineman in the 2026 class according to On3. The standout from Miami Northwestern is gaining national attention, and On3 provided an update on the Longhorns’ growing relationship with the talented recruit on Wednesday.
Strong Visit Boosts Longhorns in Johnson’s Recruitment
“Texas is emerging for On3 No. 1 DL James Johnson,” reported On3 Recruits on X, quoting national recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong. “My visit to Texas was really good,” Johnson said. The elite prospect recently transferred to Miami Northwestern for his senior season after two dominant years at North Fort Myers, where he posted 111 total tackles, 42 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, and 18 QB hits.
Texas Moves Up Johnson’s List of Favorites
Following his visit, Johnson made it clear that Texas left a strong impression. “Since visiting Texas, I’d say Texas is pretty high on my list of schools and is definitely up there around the top,” he noted. The Longhorns are battling stiff competition for his commitment, with schools like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Penn State, and Oklahoma also in the mix.
Scouting Report Highlights Johnson’s Versatility and Impact
Andrew Ivins, Director of Scouting at 247 Sports, offered high praise for Johnson earlier this year. “Explosive defensive tackle with all the fixings to make a living up front,” Ivins wrote. “Projects as a potential difference-maker at the point of attack for a College Football Playoff contender that can be stationed at different spots across the line.”
Recruiting Rankings Vary Across Services
While On3 ranks Johnson as the No. 1 defensive lineman in the 2026 class, 247 Sports has him at No. 10 for his position. Ahead of him on their list are several elite prospects, including USC commits Simote Katoanga (No. 5) and Jaimeon Winfield (No. 7), as well as LSU commit Richard Anderson (No. 6).
The top spot in 247’s rankings belongs to Jamarion Carlton, whom analyst Jordan Scruggs predicts will also land at Texas.
