Superstar Jamie Ka’s ride at Point King in the Melbourne Cup was a shock as he abandoned the $8.4 million race. Racing Victoria Stewards revealed the news on Saturday (Cox Plate Day) after connections confirmed Point King “will not be the third winner of the Melbourne Cup” on November 5. Ca will now have to find another Group 1 handicap trip over 3,200m at Flemington. It also means owner Lloyd Williams will have no horses to race and will be looking to win a record eighth Cup. Point King is trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman and is considered a top contender for the Cup and carries light weight (50.5kg).
The winner of the Archer Stakes (a Group 3 race at Flemington) finished second to Bart Cummings (2500m) in early October. Williams and James Packer also own Point King.
