The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season is nearly complete with two races remaining on the schedule. Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick secured their Championship 4 races at Phoenix thanks to wins at Las Vegas and Homestead, respectively. Two other playoff drivers will defend their spots for Sunday’s race at Martinsville. Those left in the playoffs are still extremely competitive and trying to earn points for the final roster of the season, maybe even a win, but most are looking ahead and focusing on the 2025 season. Interestingly, several drivers still have no plans for next year tonight, including Chandler Smith and Riley Herbst in the Xfinity Series and Ryan Press in the Cup Series. Or so we thought.
Rumors have circulated for weeks that the Stewart-Haas Racing Cup driver would follow his teammate into the four-car organization that will close at the end of 2024 and move to RFK Racing. Preece’s move was confirmed Tuesday by an unlikely source, with Cup Series executive Brad Moran appearing on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio to talk about Tuesday’s wet-weather tire test at Homestead. “We started testing a few years ago,” Moran said. “Obviously we’ve seen a lot this year and had really good results in New Hampshire and North Wilkesboro. And that definitely helped us get back to racing and give the fans a chance to enjoy the racing.
“Again, I haven’t driven in the rain, but I’ve definitely driven on wet roads. So at Homestead we drove car no. 42 with John Hunter, car no. 48 with Bowman and car no. 60 that Preece plans to drive next year.Moran’s mistake is good news for Preece fans. By 2025, 41 pilots will be able to land. He will join his SHR teammates and the rest of the field in the final race of round eight this weekend at Martinsville. Race coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC.
