Brenton Avdullah could have a big weekend at Sha Tin with three lively chances in Sunday’s Group 2 match.
Three-time winner of Group 1 California Spangle, Group 2 BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (1,200m), Group 2 Straight Arron BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile and Five G Patch Group 2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2,000m), Avdulla is currently 7 Byrne is currently working to increase his win tally for the season.
California Spangle failed to match Ka Ying Rising in the Group 2 Premier Bowl (1200m) last time out, but Avdulla is confident the Tony Cruz-trained sprinter has gone one better after finishing third in return to the season.

“I think he’s made good progress, he’s trained well and he doesn’t have to fight his usual partner in Ka Ying Rising [to cope]. Even if Victor Winner was voted out, this could be a problem.
“He’s a top-class horse, whether he’s over the line or out of the race, he’ll finish on the pace, so we’ll see how he goes.”
Straight Arron crossed the finish line under Avdullah in his first race against Ricky Yiu Poon-fai in the Group 2 Sha Tin Trophy (1,600m) and will be looking to unseat Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s rising star Galaxy Patch.
“The horse runs well and Ricky’s legs are great,” Avdulla said. “He attacked the line well and some of the more comfortable horses couldn’t beat him.”
“I’m looking forward to it, but I thought the Five G Patch (Women’s Group 3, Purse (1800m)) went really well.
“If Romantic Warrior is close to his peak form he will be very hard to beat, but I think Five G Patch is in very good form and I have no doubt he will run very well.”
