Regarding quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract position, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave a major clue on Wednesday, implying that the team might be content to play things as they are going into the 2024 campaign.
The Cowboys are “continuing to talk” with Prescott, according to Jones, but they basically consider themselves to be in the season and playing under Prescott’s current contract. Many interpreted that to suggest that the Cowboys most likely will not sign a new quarterback contract before Week 1.
“Once more, we are just keeping in communication,” Jones stated, as reported by Nick Harris of the Cowboys’ official website. “The problem is that we are performing admirably under the current deal because we are practicing and playing during the actual season.
“It is important for the fans to realize that, in the majority of cases, these are already-existing contracts that you have.” You should be able to work under those, but with some time left on the contract, we have got it now in the NFL (other teams are coping with it).
There may yet be a contract discussion. That is precisely what we are doing. Nobody wants to undermine their preparation or chances of performing to the best, players or teams alike.
Prescott is about to enter the last year of his present contract. A no-tag clause in his present contract means that he will become a free agent in March of next year if no long-term agreement is reached. That was one of several reasons, along with his $55 million cap hit, why it appeared to be in the team’s best interest to finalize a long-term agreement. It could have been simpler to negotiate a new contract with standout wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is also anticipating one, if that had been reduced with a new agreement.
The quarterback has stated that he would want to stay with the Cowboys and that he is not in a rush to complete a deal. That could provide some comfort, but there is a genuine chance the Cowboys will lose him for nothing.
