Mike McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys remains uncertain, with names being mentioned, change may be on the horizon

Following the Dallas Cowboys’ embarrassing 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 15, head coach Mike McCarthy finds himself under growing pressure.

While fans are often quick to demand changes, media voices are now joining the conversation, suggesting potential replacements for McCarthy. One NFL writer believes he has identified the “perfect” candidate for the Cowboys’ head coaching position.

Klint Kubiak Could Be on Jerry Jones’ Radar This Offseason

In a September 15 article for Sport DFW, Joe Summers argues that the Cowboys’ loss to the Saints highlighted the “perfect” successor to McCarthy.

“New Orleans offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is quickly emerging as a top head coaching prospect,” Summers wrote. “Derek Carr led the Saints to scores on every drive in Week 1, continuing that momentum into the fourth quarter against the Cowboys, giving Jerry Jones an ideal opportunity to evaluate someone who could take over once McCarthy is gone.”

Summers continued, “Once again, Dallas was outcoached by superior schemes. Kubiak, a rising and brilliant football mind, could very well be one of the first calls Jones makes this offseason. With McCarthy likely staying through the 2024-25 season, it’s becoming clear someone else will be in charge next year.”

Other Potential Candidates to Replace Mike McCarthy

Replacing the Cowboys’ head coach is a high-profile job, and other names are also being floated. In a September 16 piece for Sport DFW, Devon Platana suggests three more potential options beyond Kubiak.

His top choice? Bill Belichick. Platana wrote, “If the Cowboys are serious about finding a coach to take them to a Super Bowl, there’s no better option than one of the greatest to ever do it.”

“Belichick and the Cowboys could be a perfect match, particularly if they’re aiming to end their playoff drought,” he added. However, Platana noted that for Belichick to join, Jerry Jones might need to relinquish some of his control over general manager duties—a trade-off that could be worth it for a shot at bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Dallas.

In January, when Yahoo! Sports asked Jones about Belichick, his response fueled speculation: “I know him personally, and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt we could work together. None at all.”

Platana also floated the names of Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Johnson, he said, would signal a fresh start for the Cowboys, while Spagnuolo could be the defensive leader Dallas needs after their struggles against the Saints.

Mike McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys remains uncertain, but with names like Kubiak, Belichick, Johnson, and Spagnuolo being mentioned, change may be on the horizon.
