The Dallas Cowboys are facing a challenging situation and a newly-available star quarterback might be exactly what they need.
At 3-7, the Cowboys are heading into their Sunday, November 24, game against the Washington Commanders without their franchise quarterback, Dak Prescott, who is out indefinitely.
The team is in desperate need of a solution, and one may have just presented itself. A high-profile quarterback has recently parted ways with his team and is now up for grabs.
Former Giants Quarterback Daniel Jones Could Be a Perfect Fit for the Dallas Cowboys
Daniel Jones, the New York Giants’ former franchise quarterback, has been under scrutiny all season. On Friday, November 22, he officially parted ways with the team.
“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way,” Giants president John Mara said in a statement posted on X.
The release has sparked speculation among analysts about where Jones might land next, with the Dallas Cowboys emerging as the top contender.
In a November 22 feature, Christian D’Andrea of USA Today’s For the Win named Dallas as Jones’ most likely destination. He pointed out that Dallas’ season is in shambles, with ESPN giving the team less than a 1% chance of making the playoffs.
D’Andrea wrote, “Dallas isn’t merely losing games; it’s getting embarrassed in them.”
The numbers back it up: the Cowboys haven’t won a home game this season and have lost four of those by margins of at least 24 points.
This is where Jones could step in to help.
“Dak Prescott’s injury gave way to Cooper Rush, who is playing roughly like you’d expect Cooper Rush to play,” D’Andrea explained. “Signing Jones probably wouldn’t give him enough time to face his former team (and Tommy DeVito) on Thanksgiving, but it would help elevate the Cowboys’ offense as they limp through the final third of the 2024 regular season.”
D’Andrea also noted that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has taken risks before, like when he brought in Trey Lance last year. Bringing in Daniel Jones could be another calculated gamble.
“If Jones happens to play well enough to stick it to the division rival that released him, well, that’s a bonus,” D’Andrea added.
A potential matchup against the Giants on Thanksgiving Day is generating buzz, though it may be unrealistic to expect Jones to suit up in time. Still, all eyes are on Dallas to see if the move happens.
Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy Weighs In on Daniel Jones Rumors
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is already addressing questions about the possibility of adding Jones to the roster.
During a press conference on Friday, McCarthy was asked about Jones potentially joining the team just days before their Thanksgiving showdown with the Giants.
“I’ve never really been in the business of looking at players based off the team they are released from, especially with the timing of the next game,” McCarthy said, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He was a prospect I really liked coming out, but we kind of have our head down right now and really focused on working with the guys we have here.”
While McCarthy remains focused on the current roster, the speculation surrounding Daniel Jones and the Cowboys continues to build.
