Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown suffered a significant knee injury during Monday’s 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The injury occurred in the fourth quarter after a 2-yard run by Bengals running back Chase Brown. Overshown remained on the field as trainers quickly attended to him. After receiving assistance, he was helped off the field and taken directly to the locker room.
Postgame updates about the 24-year-old linebacker were grim, with head coach Mike McCarthy describing the injury as “serious.” Overshown appeared to confirm the severity of the situation with a message on X after the game.
“Wouldn’t want this for anyone else! One of God’s Toughest Soldiers,” Overshown wrote. “Keep me in your prayers.”
A third-round pick in 2023, Overshown missed his rookie season due to a torn ACL sustained during a preseason game. This year, he had emerged as a key player for the Cowboys, recording 84 tackles, eight tackles for loss, an interception, and a forced fumble.
Micah Parsons Emotional After Overshown’s Injury
Overshown’s injury cast a somber shadow over the locker room, with star linebacker Micah Parsons visibly shaken after the game.
“I cried,” Parsons admitted. “It’s like my little bro, bro. He doesn’t deserve that, either. He really don’t. Just to understand what he’s going to go through and to be there for him physically, mentally. It’s just so challenging because of the year he was having. I really just don’t think that’s fair, either.”
McCarthy shared similar sentiments, noting the impact on the team.
“I think the whole sideline felt that because it didn’t look good,” McCarthy said. “It definitely hit a lot of the guys.”
Overshown had been a standout this season, earning praise for his consistent play and growing impact.
“We’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg really,” McCarthy said recently. “I’m so impressed with him, and in his consistency, in his approach, and that’s just going to keep putting him in the position to progress.”
Cowboys Reeling After Loss to Bengals
The Cowboys’ loss to the Bengals ended a two-game winning streak and dealt a significant blow to their already slim playoff hopes. Although not mathematically eliminated, the team would now need a miracle to stay in contention.
“We understand that we dug ourselves a hole,” McCarthy said. “We had to have this one tonight. This is a very disappointing loss.”
Dallas appeared to have a chance to mount a game-winning drive late in the game, but a critical special teams error proved costly. After blocking a punt, Amani Oruwariye attempted to recover the bouncing ball, but it deflected off him and back to the Bengals. Shortly after, Joe Burrow connected with Ja’Marr Chase for the decisive touchdown.
“You see why it happened,” McCarthy said. “He turns and the ball’s there. And he reacted to it. I haven’t seen the video. I saw it live. It’s definitely a tough learning opportunity.”
The Cowboys will aim to regroup next week in a matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
