The Dallas Cowboys enjoyed a strong showing on Sunday, December 15, as star pass rusher Micah Parsons led the team to a decisive victory over the Carolina Panthers. However, significant questions continue to hang over the franchise as the 2024 regular season approaches its conclusion.
Among the top concerns are quarterback Dak Prescott’s health and head coach Mike McCarthy’s future. Yet, the most intriguing storyline revolves around the trade rumors surrounding Parsons.
The standout outside linebacker is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is poised to seek a lucrative deal, whether through an extension with the Cowboys or as a free agent when he hits the open market next March.
Should the Cowboys Be Embarrassed as Underdogs Against the Panthers?
The Cowboys face a difficult decision: they cannot afford to let Parsons leave without compensation. This means either paying him the contract he deserves or trading him for significant value before he tests free agency.
On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network added an unexpected twist to the trade speculation surrounding Parsons and his looming free agency.
A third option exists for Dallas, which could provide a temporary solution. By using the franchise tag, the Cowboys can extend Parsons’ contract for one year, albeit at a substantial pay increase for the 2025 season.
However, the franchise tag is not a long-term fix. Dallas would still need to make a decision on a new deal or trade Parsons before the 2026 season, even if they employ the tag this spring.
This season, Parsons has recorded 61 quarterback pressures, 39 hurries, and 10 sacks in 11 games, according to Pro Football Focus.
