The Dallas Cowboys face a lengthy list of priorities this 2025 offseason. With head coach Mike McCarthy departing the team this week, securing a new head coach takes top priority. However, beyond that, the team needs to address several roster gaps. Strengthening the offensive line is a pressing need, as is bolstering the secondary and potentially adding a linebacker.
The offensive line requires at least one veteran addition, possibly two. Both backup quarterbacks behind Dak Prescott are set to hit free agency, creating further uncertainty. Meanwhile, the running game continues to struggle, with Rico Dowdle entering free agency and few other reliable options available.
Still, the most urgent area to address for the Cowboys to return to contention is wide receiver. While CeeDee Lamb is a clear standout, the team lacks a reliable second option and has only a few serviceable third-tier receivers.
Bleacher Report has proposed a bold solution.
Cowboys Could Trade for Davante Adams
To address their wide receiver depth, Bleacher Report predicts the Cowboys could pursue a trade for future Hall of Famer Davante Adams.
In the article “Predicting the Biggest NFL Trades That Could Shape the 2025 Offseason,” Maurice Moton suggests the Cowboys could acquire Adams from the New York Jets in exchange for a third- and fifth-round pick.
“Adams may still be interested in the Cowboys, though. While on the I Am Athlete podcast in May 2023, Adams named CeeDee Lamb as a top-five wide receiver and compared the Cowboys wideout to himself.
“Adams may see the Cowboys’ stable quarterback situation with Dak Prescott and Lamb as a big draw if he can pick his next destination. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may be open to a splashy trade to build around Prescott and find a complement to Lamb in the passing game.”
Veteran Would Complement CeeDee Lamb
A move for Adams would make sense for the Cowboys. At 32, Adams may no longer be in his prime, but he remains an effective weapon. After a rocky start with the Raiders in 2024 and requesting a trade, Adams rebounded with the Jets. He closed out the season strong, averaging 77.6 yards per game and scoring seven touchdowns in New York.
Over the final five weeks of the 2024 season, Adams racked up 510 yards and five touchdowns.
While Adams’ future hinges on the out-clause in his contract, which could void the final two years of his five-year, $140 million deal, it may be wiser for teams to wait for him to hit free agency rather than trading for him.
Regardless of the method, adding Adams would give the Cowboys a formidable duo with Lamb in the passing game.
