Cowboys Make Bold Announcement on  Schottenheimer Move

The Dallas Cowboys introduced Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach on Monday, making him the 10th head coach in franchise history.

During a press conference at The Star, Schottenheimer addressed numerous questions regarding his promotion from offensive coordinator—a role he held under former coach Mike McCarthy for the past two seasons. The event provided Schottenheimer an opportunity to present his vision not only to the Cowboys’ players but also to the team’s fanbase.

Outlining his objectives, Schottenheimer made it clear that the team’s primary goal remains unchanged.

“The objective and the main thing is we want to win the Super Bowl,” Schottenheimer stated. “My dad (Marty Schottenheimer) always emphasized that. He’d say, ‘Why would you have any other goals? It should be about winning the Super Bowl, and only one team does, but that doesn’t mean you don’t strive for it.’”

Schottenheimer also highlighted the advantage of his familiarity with the organization.

“One of the benefits of me stepping into this prestigious position is that we can hit the ground running. I don’t need to learn the decision-makers, the quarterback, or how things operate here. That puts us ahead of some of the other teams making coaching changes.”

Cowboys Bolster Coaching Staff

With the goal of making a championship run, Schottenheimer’s next step is building his coaching staff. The Cowboys have faced notable departures following McCarthy’s exit, including longtime special teams coordinator John Fassel, who left earlier this month to join the Tennessee Titans.

To replace Fassel, the Cowboys have hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. Sorensen briefly held the defensive coordinator position in San Francisco before being replaced by Robert Saleh, who returned to the organization in that role. Notably, Saleh had also interviewed for the Cowboys’ head coaching position before Schottenheimer was ultimately selected.

Nick Sorensen’s Connection to Schottenheimer

In addition to hiring former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as the new defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have now brought in Sorensen, whose ties to Schottenheimer date back several years.

Sorensen has worked in various capacities on special teams, first with the Seahawks until 2016 and later with the Jaguars for one season in 2021. However, his addition to the Cowboys’ staff is more about his overall coaching experience and his familiarity with Schottenheimer than his special teams expertise.

The two previously worked together in Jacksonville in 2021, when Schottenheimer was the passing game coordinator. They also spent time on the same coaching staff in Seattle from 2018 to 2020.
