In a crucial trial for the Derby at Epsom the following month, Lambourn won the Chester Vase Stakes with a powerful finish. Under jockey Ryan Moore, the 11-8 favorite was in third place heading into the last straight but rallied to win by a length and a half. Convergent took third place while Lazy Griff came in second. Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who won the Chester Vase Stakes for an unprecedented eleventh time, stated, “He looked a thorough stayer and while he was a little on and off the bridle, once the penny dropped, he came home really strongly.” He continued: “He got the trip really well and he’s gone through the line nicely.” You would have to state that he is currently a member of the Epsom team, although this is a busy week for the trials.
There are Lingfield, Leopardstown, and York, among others. “We’ll just have to see how they all get on but we were thinking of sending him to Epsom, as they learn so much when they go to Chester.”
