Last weekend was no exception to the Cup Series’ custom of teams wearing vintage liveries in remembrance of vintage vehicles and drivers at the Goodyear 400. But last weekend’s winner, Hamlin, acknowledged on his Actions Detrimental podcast that the idea doesn’t have the same momentum and excitement as it had when it was new. After a late caution, Hamlin won at Darlington thanks to the excellent work of his pit crew, which propelled him to the front for the restart and put him in position to win the Cup Series for the second time in a row.

Hamlin: I hear both sides of the argument

“The NASCAR world has changed.” It’s difficult to maintain its enthusiasm, and I believe part of it has faded. Although this was usually based on the idea that we would have a throwback paint scheme, I hear various arguments that it’s not about the paint schemes. However, the world has shifted once more. Our sport no longer has sponsors that drive these cars in 20+ races. And I believe that The Teardown accurately identified this. They won’t forfeit one of their races to alter their brand, logo, or colors while they have sponsors on the vehicles for three or four races.

By doing that, you’re not providing them with any value. “When a sport is sponsored, the sponsors will choose what you see. We just must accept that as the model that we currently use.
