Red Bull announces legendary F1 designer Newey leaving the team
Red Bull have announced that Adrian Newey will be leaving the team. The respected F1 designer is leaving the team after almost 20 years at Milton Keynes.
Newey joined Red Bull in 2006 ahead of F1’s second season and was instrumental in the team’s success over the years, helping to transform the team from mid-table runners and points scorers to Grand Prix winners and world champions.

In fact, Red Bull has so far won six constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles (between Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen) with cars designed by Newey, and is currently looking to win a double title again in 2024.
We are on track to acquire it. However, ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, it was confirmed that Newey would step down as chief technology officer in the first quarter of 2025.
Red Bull’s statement also revealed that Newey will be stepping away from design work in F1 to “focus on the final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the long-awaited RB17”.
He plans to see this project through to the end and continue to participate in selected races until the end of the 2024 season, supporting the F1 team on the circuit. “Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars,” Newey said. “My dream was to become an F1 engineer and I was lucky enough to realize that dream.
It was a huge honor for me to have played such a key role in the development of Red from the beginning for almost 20 years. It was an honor.” Playing for Bull Racing, he was a rookie on the team that won multiple titles.
“But I think now is the perfect time to pass this baton to someone else and look for a new challenge.” In the meantime, we are nearing the final stages of RB17 development and that is what I intend to focus on for the remainder of my time with the team.

This is a real honor and we are confident that the engineering team is well prepared to work towards the final development of the car within his four-year regulatory period.

Red Bull team principal and CEO Christian Horner also praised Newey’s influence within the team, describing him as a “true legend”. He said: “All of our best moments over the past 20 years have happened when Adrian was at the technical command.
His vision and genius helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. Exceptional ability to think beyond F1 and enrich Grand Prix car design with broader inspiration, an outstanding ability to embrace change and find the most challenging areas to focus on within the rulebook.
His talent and unrelenting will to win gave Red Bull Racing more power than even the late Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined.
Plus, these 19 years I spent with Adrian were so much fun. For me, Adrian was already a superstar designer when he came to Red Bull. Twenty years and 13 championships later, he leaves racing as a true legend.
“He was also a friend of mine and someone to whom I will be forever grateful for everything he contributed to our partnership. His legacy echoes through the halls of Milton Keynes, and his RB17 truck Carr is a valuable testament to his time with us and will be a legacy.”
What does the future hold for New Way? Newey will remain with Red Bull Technology Group until the first quarter of 2025, but there is no word on his future activities after his departure.
Ferrari, which has signed Lewis Hamilton from next season, is reported to be the favorite to win, while Aston Martin is also thought to be a possible transfer destination.
Newey’s pedigree in F1 is undeniable – he has driven at least 12 constructor cars to victory during his career – and he’ll likely prove to be a valuable addition wherever he goes.
