Owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, says things you never expected to hear.
In response to Tyron Smith inking a free agent contract with the New York Jets, the legendary player in the NFL said, “We can’t afford that.”
“You are aware of our admiration for him,” Jones said to Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein. We would be in serious trouble “[If] he makes all of his incentives & things like that.”
The one-year contract that the eight-time Pro Bowler inked had only $6.5 million in real guarantees. If, however, he fulfills all of the incentives, he stands to earn an additional $13.5 million.
Smith will receive a half-million dollar bonus if he wins his tenth Pro Bowl. According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, he receives a quarter of a million dollars for each playoff victory the Jets have, with a $1 million cap.
The most significant rewards are dependent on playing time. To start the first incentive, he must participate in at least 38% of the offensive snaps; after that, it gets more intense.
Jerry Jones Made Some Startling Remarks About Tyron Smith
According to Forbes, the Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise on Earth, valued at $9 billion and graded B.
The Pro Football Network claims that Jones has a $13.6 billion net wealth. This is sufficient to place him fifth among the NFL’s wealthiest owners.
To put things in perspective, Woody Johnson, the owner of the Jets, is valued at $10.7 billion and is rated No. 9 on the same list.
It would raise eyebrows if the green and white outbid the Cowboys on any available free agent. not to mention one of the most reliable Cowboys of the twenty-first century.
Smith is among the greatest left tackles in football history. With five separate All-Pro selections (combining first and second-team accolades), and eight Pro Bowl nominations, he is among the NFL’s most decorated active players.
It’s interesting that during the contract negotiations with Smith, Connor Hughes of SNY claimed on social media that the Jets “felt like they were writing a contract for the Cowboys to match.” “When he accepted, everyone was in disbelief. They didn’t believe he would, according to Hughes.
