The Eagles receiver could be the team’s next great tight end

A few months ago, Yadback recommended Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now we suggest a positional move on the team’s first sixth-round pick. Wilson’s college career got off to a slow start at Arizona State, where he played for head coach (and Eagles legend) Herm Edwards. After transferring to Florida State, Wilson led the Seminoles with 43 catches and 897 yards in 2022. But these are not important numbers. With a nearly 85-inch arm span and nearly 36-inch arms, the 6-foot-7, 237-pound wide receiver can look out of place against even the tallest quarterbacks in the NFL. Given his 4.52 speed, it’s easy to see why Philadelphia would be willing to use the sixth round to get him.

If you think Wilson’s size and speed are a better fit for the tight end position, you’re not alone. Before the draft, many teams suggested that he switch positions, but the Giants wide receiver was unwilling to do so. “I just let my performance speak for itself,” Wilson told reporters at the NFL scouting combine. “I’ve been struggling with it since I went 6-5. So this is nothing new to me.But with new teammates like A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith recently signed long-term contracts, and the tight end may be his best chance to make the team. There are currently four tight ends on the roster. Dallas Goerth is clearly their best player, but hasn’t played a full season since 2018. Without a catch, and recently signed C.J. Uzoma had just eight catches with the Jets.

Whether he likes it or not, tight end could be the perfect spot for Wilson, and with rookie minicamp less than a week away, he’s quickly learning that a sixth-round pick doesn’t dictate terms. No matter how big it is.
