The Philadelphia Eagles are making big changes to their linebacking corps as they prepare for the 2024 season, with a significant departure from starter Jalen Hurt. The Eagles have signed Will Grier to a one-year contract, adding him to the roster, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The acquisition follows the Eagles’ recent trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers in which they acquired Kenny Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round draft pick. In return, the Eagles traded a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks.
Grier has been off since his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers in 2019, going 0-2 in two starts with no touchdowns while also throwing an interception. Four times.Greer was waived by the Panthers at the end of the 2021 preseason, and Greer was waived by the Dallas Cowboys. However, he is still the No. 3 quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
When Prescott broke his thumb, missing five games into the 2022 season, Greer got a chance to play with the Cowboys. Despite being promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, Greer remained the Rush’s backup and never saw any playing time. After leaving Dallas in August 2023, Greer’s journey continues after he showed his skills in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He briefly joined the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad before the New England Patriots signed him to their 53-man roster, albeit briefly before returning to the practice squad. Through a twist of fate, Greer finally made the Los Angeles Chargers’ 53-man roster on Dec. 19, taking over for Justin Herbert after he suffered a season-ending broken finger.
As for the Eagles’ former quarterback, Hurts, Marcus Mariota and Tanner McGee filled the starting spots last season. However, Mariota left the Washington Commanders as a free agent on March 14, leaving room for a new candidate. McGee, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, remains on the Eagles roster and is expected to compete with Greer for the No. 3 or emergency quarterback spot throughout the offseason.
